Xarelto Causes Incurable Uncontrolled Bleeding

Aggressive local attorneys handling national cases – The representation you need

Xarelto is the brand name of a prescription anti-coagulant, or blood thinner, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (JPI) a division of the massive pharmaceuticals and medical device manufacturer Johnson & Johnson.  Although it has only been available on the market since 2011, there have already been several lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals due to uncontrolled bleeding and death in some people who took Xarelto. At the Rocky McElhaney Law Firm we are ready and willing to help you if you have been injured or lost a loved one due to Xarelto’s side effects.

What makes Xarelto a dangerous drug?

Xarelto is an anti-coagulant that works to block the production of a substance in the blood called thrombin. Thrombin’s role is to form fibrous clots in the blood, which helps stop the bleeding. Because it works so well in thinning the blood by not allowing the natural clotting factors to operate, there is the danger of an uncontrolled bleeding emergency. The older type of anti-coagulants such as heparin and Coumadin had an antidote – vitamin K– which could be injected in the event of a bleed. For Xarelto there is no antidote. There have been approximately 65 uncontrolled bleeding deaths due to Xarelto.

Another issue is that Xarelto has been shown in a medical research study published in the British Medical Journal to double the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in comparison to Coumadin.

The Food & Drug Administration now believes that a defective blood-testing device might be at the core of the problem, as reported by the New York Times. The paper reports that J&J has been questioned “about whether there was evidence that the device was malfunctioning when the [clinical] trial was underway,” as well as “internal company documents that they said showed doctors were complaining to the trial leadership during the course of the study.”

Negligence lawsuits for Xarelto side effects

To date hundreds of individuals have begun filing negligence lawsuits against JPI with their own attorneys. There have been so many lawsuits that Multi-District Lawsuits have been set up in a few venues in order to streamline pretrial preparations and discovery given the fact that all of these cases are quite similar in nature.
